Perimeter Wall Insulation: Biomattone® Infill Walls

Biomattone® infill walls are the TecnoCanapa Bioedilizia® solution for creating lightweight, insulating and vapour-permeable perimeter walls in new construction. A Biomattone® infill wall completes the building’s load-bearing structure, whether reinforced concrete, timber or steel, combining thermal insulation and mass in a single prefabricated block.

What are Biomattone® infill walls?

Biomattone® is a prefabricated masonry block that combines insulation properties with thermal mass. It consists of Coarse Hemp Shiv (certified hemp wood), Natural Dolomitic Binder and a probiotic additive based on symbiotic microorganisms. It is available in BA20, BA40 and BA50 sizes, designed to provide greater installation efficiency and lower transport impact than traditional sizes.

Why choose it for the building envelope?

Within the building envelope, Biomattone® infill walls can be used as load-bearing perimeter walls or to complete reinforced-concrete, timber or steel structures. The block provides thermal insulation, humidity regulation and acoustic comfort, contributing to the hygrothermal balance of living spaces.

  • Thermal insulation and energy saving.
  • Natural humidity regulation and sound absorption.
  • Resistance to fire and frost.
  • No vulnerability to insects and mould; long-term durability.
  • Carbon-negative material, recyclable at end of life.

Installing Biomattone® infill walls

Biomattone® infill walls are installed using specific TecnoCanapa system mortars. Malta e Canapa is a premixed dry mortar classified as Class M5 under EN 998-2, designed to provide consistent workability and excellent colour uniformity. Malta Pronta, by contrast, is a highly breathable natural mortar made from Coarse Hemp Shiv and Natural Dolomitic Binder, without hydraulic binders or mineral aggregates. It eliminates thermal bridges at the joints and makes it possible to create monolithic hemp-lime masonry.

As with all hemp-lime systems, installation quality affects the final result. The mortar formulation must be respected, the work must be protected from precipitation during sensitive stages, and drying must be uniform, avoiding premature closure with low-permeability finishes. For a general overview of correct masonry execution criteria, independent technical sources such as ENEA can be consulted alongside official TecnoCanapa documentation.

A project example: Ortopì Country Canapa House

TecnoCanapa has used the Biomattone® system, among other projects, for the Ortopì Country Canapa House in Porto Recanati (MC), an example of hemp-lime perimeter infill integrated into a new building. Each project must in any case be assessed with the TecnoCanapa technical department according to its structure, climate and required performance.

Frequently asked questions about Biomattone® infill walls

Can Biomattone® also be used as an internal partition?
Yes. In addition to perimeter infill walls, Biomattone® is used for internal partition walls, contributing to the hygrothermal and acoustic comfort of indoor spaces.

What is the difference between Malta e Canapa and Malta Pronta?
Malta e Canapa is a premixed dry mortar with hydraulic and air-setting binders. Malta Pronta is a natural mortar without hydraulic binders, designed for maximum vapour permeability and to eliminate thermal bridges at the joints.
