After applying a base coat such as Natural Lime Plaster, a Biomattone® wall can receive different finishes. For a natural, textured appearance, the TecnoCanapa Bioedilizia® System offers Canapulino and Canaposo, two specific lime-putty products designed to maximise the vapour permeability of the masonry and naturally regulate indoor humidity.
What are Canapulino and Canaposo?
Canapulino and Canaposo are two finishes based on lime putty aged for 18 months. They differ in the hemp component used. Canapulino® contains Fine Hemp Shiv 0–6 mm, while Canaposo® contains finer Hemp Powder 0–1 mm. Both pastes can be combined with Calcium Carbonates for a natural colour, or with Cocciopesto Powder or coloured earth pigments for a chosen shade. This colour flexibility makes both products suitable for restoration work as well as new sustainable construction, a growing sector also highlighted by OECD analyses of building energy-efficiency policies.
Why choose Canapulino® or Canaposo®?
The complete absence of hydraulic binders distinguishes these two finishes from conventional plaster. As a result, the high cellulose content of the hemp maximises the vapour permeability of the masonry. Both products also have desalinating and dehumidifying properties thanks to their high hygroscopic capacity. In practice, they act as natural humidity regulators on both new walls and existing masonry. The result is a tangible improvement in indoor environmental quality and comfort.
Differences between Canapulino and Canaposo
| Characteristic | Canapulino® | Canaposo® |
|---|---|---|
| Hemp component | Fine Hemp Shiv 0–6 mm | Hemp Powder 0–1 mm |
| Application thickness | 5–10 mm | 2–3 mm |
| Packaging | 20 kg bucket | 20 kg bucket |
| Coverage per bucket | 3 m² at 5 mm thickness | 5 m² at 3 mm thickness |
| Final appearance | Textured, with a more pronounced grain | Textured, with a finer texture |
Application of Canapulino®
Canapulino® is a ready-to-use product applied manually at a thickness of between 5 and 10 mm. Before application, any existing deteriorated plaster must be removed. The substrate must also be checked to ensure that it is free from friable material. A first bonding coat is applied to the masonry, followed by additional coats until the required thickness is reached. Finally, the surface is ruled off and float-finished to achieve the final textured appearance.
Application of Canaposo®
Canaposo® is also ready to use and is applied manually, but at a thinner layer of between 2 and 3 mm. Before starting, the substrate must be even and uniform. As with Canapulino®, a first coat is applied to the masonry, followed by additional coats until the required thickness is reached. For example, where a finer and more uniform texture than Canapulino® is required, Canaposo® is often preferred for exposed interior finishes.
Canapulino®, Canaposo® and the other finishes in the Biomattone® System
Not every wall requires a textured appearance. For a fine smooth finish, the TecnoCanapa Bioedilizia® System offers Malta Fine for interiors and Stabilitura Naturale Traspirante Plus for exteriors. However, when a more natural exposed finish is desired, Canapulino® and Canaposo® remain the choice most consistent with the philosophy of the entire Biomattone® range, while preserving the vapour permeability of the complete building system.
Frequently asked questions about Canapulino and Canaposo
What is the main difference between Canapulino® and Canaposo®?
The main difference is the hemp component: Canapulino® uses Fine Hemp Shiv 0–6 mm, while Canaposo® uses finer Hemp Powder 0–1 mm. As a result, Canaposo® is applied in thinner layers.
Are Canapulino® and Canaposo® suitable only for restoration work?
No. They are suitable for both conservation work and new sustainable construction. Their high vapour permeability makes them useful in both contexts.
What colour are Canapulino® and Canaposo®?
The natural colour is obtained with Calcium Carbonates. Alternatively, Cocciopesto Powder or coloured earth pigments can be selected to obtain other shades.
In summary, Canapulino® and Canaposo® complete the finishing system of the Biomattone® range with a textured appearance and high hygric performance.
